New story: New Day Dawning

I have a new story out: "New Day Dawning."

A novel cyanobacterium is threatening ocean fish stocks, and Winna and Tomás are at an international conference convened to address the problem. Also at the conference is Káurë New Day, a participant from the Solimões Sodality whose presence warrants an FAQ and causes some strife.

Káurë New Day is named after Cacicus cela, called káurë in the Magüta language, and photographed here by Flickr user Francisco Piedrahita.



It's a pretty bird!

"Magüta" is an autonym for the people more commonly known to outsiders as the Tikuna or Ticuna. I am very excited to be--God willing--traveling to their ancestral lands in a few weeks, and I've been in contact with a Magüta tour guide who offers walks where you get to learn about plants and things. ... I may have overwhelmed him with a firehose of too much English and enthusiasm, but if I do get to meet up with him, I will be sure to write about it.

I love the idea of the colonials, and the tension about choices made for you that have made you the person you are and can't be undone, and the strengths each of us has to draw on because of who we are. This bird has rather the look of our native magpie, but a different sort of colourful.

I thought it was a corvid too but then I looked it up and learned it's an icterid, like our red-winged blackbirds and orioles.

I didn't know red-winged blackbirds and orioles were in the same family! There's something sharp about the bills of birds in this family.

Internet issues conspired to keep me from responding to this immediately. I read the story as soon as you posted about it and really enjoyed it, enjoyed how I needed to sit with the ideas presented--about individuality, manipulation of others for their good and the greater good, acquiescence/permission, forced compliance, power...and the list just goes on.

I hope that your trip is safe and blessed. And I am sure the guide will be thrilled to accompany people deeply interested in what they are seeing and learning. <3

Oh wow--thank you for this very good (better than I could have done) list of al the things I wanted to address, was hoping to address, in this story. And for saying "how I needed to sit with the ideas," because as much as anything, that's what I wanted to do: was just tell a story in which both viewpoints presented seemed like true possibilities. I feel like a lot of times, maybe most times--at least in genre fiction?--the author wants to persuade, or at the very least shows a strong inclination in one direction when an issue is raised. I'm fascinated by the topic of collective consciousness (like Winna), but I see that it has real issues or drawbacks (like Tomás). I didn't really want to say, "And so the answer is... THIS." I just wanted to say, "Wow, complicated, huh?" Although, because so many stories present the negative aspects of collective consciousness (the Borg, etc.), I wanted at least to try to make it seem potentially genuinely appealing while not forgetting the problems. ... Anyway, thank you giving me an opportunity to make an author statement, LOL.

And thank you for your blessing and good wishes! I'm happy to say that the guide wrote back!! I didn't totally scare him away. I'll get to learn about current Magüta life from people actually living it!
