Back from the Amazon!

In spite of near crippling pre-trip nerves, my visit in Leticia was wonderful!
--I was a passenger on a motorbike multiple times!
--I swam in a river! (Not The river, but a river)
-- I saw a pink river dolphin and many gray ones!
--I made asaí juice!
--I did a craft project with the kids of one of my friends and played chase games with them!
--I made the acquaintance of a truly grandísima ceiba!
--I visited a shelter for stray dogs run by a friend of one of my friends!
--I saw a parade for the 159th anniversary of Leticia's founding!

But probably the thing that people would most enjoy seeing at this point in time is... an encounter with a pet capybara. He was a sweetie ^_^

I was over the moon about the pink dolphin sighting. I've been several times, and this was the first time I was lucky enough to see one!

I'm glad you had a wonderful trip!! And OH MY GOD AMAZON RIVER DOLPHINS— I mean, OMG CAPYBARAS, too, but I had a book about Amazon river dolphins as a kid and so my inner child is squealing in delight.

It's the books you had as a kid, right? Or, too, in my case, the books you read to kids: I had one that I adored, The Great Kapok Tree, so meeting the very-big ceiba (kapok) was huge for me.

That would no doubt be fun too, but I don't have a license for that! One step at a time ;-)

Dolphins! Dolphins in the river!

The dolphins in the river were wonderful! We saw some gray ones right at the embarkation point in Leticia, which is really rare--they hardly ever come there (so I'm told), but there they were, just dolphining away! And then in Puerto Nariño my friend F pointed, and there was a pink one, which my friends call "boto," a local name for delfin rosado, pink dolphin. IT WAS SO PINK.

What's the deal with pink dolphins? Are they kind of like albinos? (No pigment?)

They're a whole other species! Apparently the largest freshwater dolphin in the world! They do have pigment--pink (and gray)

There's a whole mythology all along the Amazon about these dolphins being capable of turning into people and seducing people on shore, so you get all kinds of fun statuary of very buff, six-pack-having dolphin-humans :D

It's like selkies on the northern islands of Scotland- seal people. There are still some on Orkney who claim to be descended from them.

The whole trip sounds amazing. River dolphins and a tame capybara! I've only seen capybaras in zoos, but they always look very appealing.

Yes, the design of their faces is naturally calming. They may not always be calm, but they **look** calm!
