It's been more than a week since I posted! Part of that's just life being busy; part is that osprey_archer is here!

Today we went to Bright Water Bog, swung on a swing, ate some cranberries, and saw ice forming. It was sunny, but a cold wind was blowing, and a few flurries of snow came down.



(We also went to the Smith College Botanical Gardens, but this is a drive-by post! So there's only the one photo.)

The swirls of it looked like how frost sometimes looks on a window--you could see the kinship.

Ice crystals often form in fractals, hence one fractal named "Sierpinski snowflake." Fractals create many shapes in nature, often with both minute and massive versions of the same pattern. Swirls in ice show how a fractal can self-modify around an obstacle or follow a path of least resistance. So it's fun to watch.

It's been very fun! Earlier I got to meet skygiants and genarti in person for the first time, as they drove with osprey_archer so we could all visit the Yiddish Book Center.

Your senses would have been even more blasted if you were with us! The cold air, the taste of the cranberries. Only smell was kind of missing--there was just the cold scent of chilly landscape.

I was so tired last night I could not figure out what was in the photo. This morning, bing! I keep forgetting everybody except us is still wintry--what a pretty sight!

Hahaha, I totally know what you mean about being too tired to process, register, etc. Yeah, it was so pretty. We were saying to each other how cool it was to see the ice in the process of forming--usually it's ice, or there's no ice, not this in-between stage.

I bet that was fascinating. Another thing that's always fascinated me is (are?) the descriptions of ice breaking up. One source has it hissing, another booming, a third cracking. No doubt all these are driven by the action of the water beneath.

Belated comment to say what a great time we had! Loved eating the cranberries right out of the bog and watching the ice form on the water. And what a delightful swing!
