Today I went out to mail a letter, walking through the woods, like I did the day I dropped a card by a pine tree. It was much warmer today, but the path through the woods was still covered with ice. If I had been wearing ice skates, I could have sped along it, my own tiny Rideau Canal.

On the way back from the post office, the clouds were thickening and the wind picked up, and I worried about trees falling on me. I never used to worry about this in the woods, but winds that bring down trees are much more common now. At home, I picked up mail from our postbox... and there was this postcard:

minoanmiss --she sent it for me to share with the pine tree.

Isn't that great?

Next time I walk that route, I promise I will! Thank you, MM!

That path through the woods is so beautiful! Although hard walking if you are NOT wearing ice skates, perhaps.

It is! I usually avoid it when it gets like this (which it does every year through melting snow then freezing). But every now and then I feel like sliding on it--and yesterday was one of those days. So I did like a kid on a frozen puddle--whee!

My goodness. How would you walk on that path? Do you need special spiked boots or something? Or would people just walk on the leaves?

Yesterday I tentatively slid along it the way a kid might slide on an frozen puddle, and that was fun. For whatever reason, yesterday it seemed less threatening--maybe because the air was warmer and it seemed, therefore, less hard? More like wood than iron, to compare it to other substances. On other days, though--and on the way home yesterday--yes: I would walk on the edges, in the leaves. The day that I dropped the card, I actually avoided this path altogether and took a slightly different route. That was because that other day there was still much more snow on the ground, and with routes that are well traveled, the snow gets compressed and hard, and even the sides of this path, where people walk to avoid the ice, were likely to be hard to negotiate. The nearby route I took almost no one ever takes, so it was easier to tramp through. But both routes go by the pine tree!

It has been decades since I lived anywhere where ice outside a freezer was even conceivable, so I am grateful for the detail!

I wish I could have some time living in an environment like yours... I have some plans to try to parlay my newly acquired Tetun into something, but probably those will remain daydream plans.

Good luck! No harm in starting to look around and make plans now, though opportunities in Timor Leste may have to wait util Southeast Asian countries are convinced that opening up a bit more won't lead to EU/UK/US levels of COVID deaths.
