I realized that the charming watermelon I'd bought at a farm stand came with a map imprinted on its rind--I guess all watermelons do; how did I not notice?

map of a wetland

It's a map of a wetland, rivers threading through buoyant land--the dark green is the rivers, the light green is the land, but you can see how streamlets are woven right into the land. You can travel by boat along the rivers, and the marshgrass is so high no one will see you the next river over.

Watermelons keep these maps on their rinds because they are water melons.

I like this very, very much.

I just bought a watermelon at a farmstand today! Synchronicity!!

Also, the watermelon-marshland sounds like a good setting for a story.

I love this and feel that there's a story in it.

Yes, my mind was transported right away to a story of mine where part of the world has a setting very much like a watermelon-rind map. I haven't touched the story in years, yet reading your description, I was right there in it, smelling it, feeling it, hearing it... :D

That is JUST what those are! Now I want a watermelon, but then I'd have to eat it.

Indeed there are; and in fact, if somebody else preps the watermelon, I'll eat it happily enough. It's just that by the time I've done wrestling with it, I just want to take a shower and eat a bag of potato chips instead.

You are so right! Most watermelons here are plain dark green or very clearly striped, so I hadn't realised it before. These splotchy ones aren't common.

I will look more closely at the next striped one that I meet! Perhaps it is a matter of scale...

Don't follow the drinking gourd-- follow the watermelon!
