Over on Mastodon I was made aware of the existence of this beautiful little zine, done in the traditional way (all printed on a single sheet of paper), Meditations with Insects: An Art of Noticing, so I decided to order it.

It came in a brown envelope with drawings of a beetle, small bird, and owl on it, and the sender was "Unfolding Connections."

It was everything I hoped for and more. The main text directs readers to quiet, curious attention to creatures often ignored or disliked:

And then, wonder of wonders, there's text on the reverse side, too: quotes about recognizing and appreciating the presence and wisdom of other beings--unfolding connections to make ;-)

a quote from Dingo Makes Us Human by Deborah Bird Rose

That quote has a typo, but it's the one that got me choked up reading it aloud to Wakanomori.

I really loved this one, too:

"the world is full of persons
only some of them human
and life is always lived in
relationship with others"

--Graham Harvey, Animism: Respecting the Living World

The creator, Kristian Brevik, has a Patreon, and he also makes lanterns of sea creatures that when lit up show the creatures' skeletons. Seems like a very cool guy.

And here's a photo from a week or so ago of some bright yellow coltsfoot pushing up through the leaf litter.

yellow coltsfoot (look something like dandelions) poking up from brown leaves.

... I offer these as necessary nourishment in the harrowing landscape we're navigating right now.

You'll remember that the ninja girl did a book on glass footwear. That was purely for her own fun. This one, "Who Is the Best Hero?" was to help the Japanese elementary school students she teaches learn adjectives in English.

It is hijōni kawaii, or as we say in English, exceptionally cute. And she gave me permission to share. Behold!

The cover page, with four little animal friends contemplating the important question, Who is the best hero?

The first spread: the little mouse votes for Turbo Tiger, while the lamb favors Care Cat:

The second spread: the panda endorses Positive Puppy, but the crocodile has eyes only for Wild Wolf.

Thing is, the crocodile only describes Wild Wolf. She doesn't say anything about anything that Wild Wolf has actually done. In the last spread, the other animal kids wait for the crocodile to elaborate--but being cute and cool is good enough for her!

The back, which I didn't photograph, asks, "What do you think?"

So my friends, what *do* you think? Turbo Tiger? Care Cat? Positive Puppy? Or Wild Wolf?

The ninja girl sometimes makes tiny books, and recently she made one on glass footwear. She was inspired by experimenting with making waraji--Japanese straw sandals--which got her thinking about the viability of glass as a material for making shoes. (Here is a photo of some waraji.) She knew that shoes are sometimes made of inflexible materials--think wooden clogs--so she researched types of those and created CINDERELLA'S GUIDE TO GLASS SHOES

The shoes are rated three stars for possible--you might be able to wear such a shoe--two stars for risky, and one star for "clear and present danger"

And last but not least, just for fun, and completely unwearable, the glass sneaker:

Back in December, the daughter of the novelist Grace Lin, who lives in the region, was creating and selling magical ducks as a fundraiser for the emergency fund her school's PTO had set up for families in need. I bought a few, and today several of them have taken residence in the nooks and crannies of the wall of the nearby railway bridge:

Here are a couple from a distance--can you see them?

And up close:

Here's another at a distance and up close:

And the last one:

It's kind of a stressful bridge to walk under because it's only wide enough to permit one car and there's a fairly frequent number of cars (... for a semirural area--the road is a shortcut to highways south), but it does get some foot traffic (people like me). I guess these constitute Easter eggs, in the internet sense of the word, for those who happen to look at the wall?

A family member made a tiny zine for October:

black & white, 8 illustrations, simple photocopied & folded/stapled zine bc i wanted to try sth with no digital editing or anything. if you want one, it’s $2, just drop me a dm

Here's a way to reach them: Tumblr 'ask' link

October makes me think of Inktober--I think I'm going to pass on day 2's prompt, which is "mindless," but maybe I'll try the AI-generated prompt, "spoon creature." I like the AI list.

What if when you journeyed, the road only appeared after you? I guess that's the case for explorers--they create paths behind them. So, snails and slugs are explorers.

... Also, when you see a slug's silvery path, you expect some amazingly lovely creature must have made it.

"And you'd be right," says a self-confident slug, maybe blushing a little that you should reach such a flattering conclusion.
