On the less marvelous side of the scales
Sep. 30th, 2021 05:54 pmI broke my toe! Falling down in my own house! How dumb is that? And when the doctor looked at the X-ray, he said he wanted to talk to a foot surgeon because of the nature of the break... and now they want to do surgery. I am NOT EAGER for that, not one bit. I thought they could just put it in a boot and it would get better. So I will talk to the surgeon tomorrow and try to get a better sense of things.
This was not in my game plan, but I guess breaking random bones, big or small, rarely is in anyone's game plan.

Date: 2021-10-01 12:04 am (UTC)Technically I'm not supposed to drive--but I have to drive! (For instance, the surgeon consultation tomorrow is an hour's drive to the north. How am I supposed to get there if I don't drive? I wonder at the mythical patient who has bunches of unemployed friends and relatives around, just waiting to do two-hour round trips for them.)

Date: 2021-10-01 10:45 pm (UTC)Falls happen. I broke my wrist in a "tripped over nothing" fall, a few years back. No point in self-castigation... A future agenda of doing exercises to improve balance and responsiveness to slips is worth considering, though. (Some friends and I recently found some of those on YouTube—let me know if you'd like the links.)
I hope that your toe will heal up well, whether that involves having surgery or not—whatever will get you the best long-term result, eh?
I'm someone who has had multiple surgeries (six, not counting dental or dermatological procedures). At the suggestion of a hypnotherapist I used to work with, I now make it my standard practice ask the surgeon to say something like the following, during the operation, to help enlist my unconscious mind in supporting my healing process:
"This is going very well."
"There is very little bleeding."
"This should heal up just fine."
I write those prompts on a brightly-colored post-it and bring it to my check-in for the operation, and either hand it to the surgeon or ask appropriate staff to do so.
They tend to tranq me pretty thoroughly even for "local anesthesia" operations, so I don't know if the surgeons actually DO say those things, but none of them have protested or scoffed at my request. I figure it's always worth a shot to request it. And I figured it was worth mentioning to you, just in case.
Sending good wishes your way!

Date: 2021-10-01 10:58 pm (UTC)I'm sorry you've had so many surgeries, but I admire your equanimity (I realize it probably took time to develop).
Thank you for the good wishes! I talked to the surgeon, and he heard my anxieties and said that although his first choice would be surgery, he was willing to go the nonsurgical route, and I was hugely relieved and grateful.
