coming soon: "The Gown of Harmonies" ebook

"The Gown of Harmonies" was a story of mine that was included in Sherwood Smith's anthology It Happened at the Ball--various stories centering on or involving a ball. The exclusivity period is over, so I thought I'd offer it as as an ebook. (Actually, I had wanted to do a paperback too, but that turned out not to be possible, or at least not possible using the store of energy that I have available to pursue the matter.)

Any minute now... or anyway, in the next couple of days... it will be available across the digital universe! There will be dancing and music in the digital spheres!

It's pretty just to look at, right? I feel like a contented child looking at it.

I don't know about new eyes! Not sure how it will escape the gravity well of folks who know me--but hey, it's worth putting out there and seeing what happens, I'm thinking.

I liked the story a lot. As a contemporary-for-us fairy tale it so much retains the fairy tale qualities of story structure and otherness, while you weave out a harmonious and satisfying larger narrative and characterizations around it. I like so much how your fairies are really enigmatic and other. I didn't quite know how I felt about the sad parallels between fairy and human workrooms, but I'm chewing on it in a way that tells me I find it profoundly satisfying, the half-efface smudge of blood beside the beautiful mouth.

Thank you for such a thoughtful response to the story. I think I feel like the fairy folk have it in them to be every bit as exploitative as humans; I feel like the fairies--at least the ones I was imagining for the purposes of this story--haven't really learned empathy.

I thriftily submitted a slightly-altered version of that comment as a review on amazon. :D

At any rate the fairies of folklore are at most empathetic from a strange angle and/or partially. Very appropriate.

I do wonder about the inner life and relationships of the dancing princess.
