Halloween mouth

This year for Halloween I decided to turn the big pot we use to hand candy out into a gaping mouth. ARE YOU BRAVE ENOUGH TO PUT YOUR HAND IN THE GOBLIN'S MOUTH TO RETRIEVE A PIECE OF CANDY?

Here is the armature, all papier-mâchéd over:



And here it is with tissue paper for the final colors and details:



It looks a lot less menacing colored in, huh! I ... wonder if I could/should have made it a little more scary. Ah well, it's probably better not to terrify the trick-or-treaters.

I think it's because the eyes are so big. How could anyone be afraid of anything with such big sad eyes? Especially when the white marks make it look like it might be crying. SAD GOBLIN.

I think also it doesn't have V-eyebrows. V-eyebrows make a face look mad.

It's amazing how easy it is to scare the littlest ones. I still remember the online discussion where a mother was asking for advice after her daughter had been terrified by a book, then wanted it read again, and had a nightmare.

The book was Disney's Snow White.

Oh definitely--my father talks about being scared by Disney's Snow White (admittedly the movie rather than a picture book), and I can remember being frightened by particular expressions on faces in illustrations as a kid.

Love it! Now I want to make one. What did you use for the armature?

I used cut-up cereal boxes, with more bits added to create a nose and eyebrows. The pot has handles, so I cut out ears and stuck them in the handles.

Kick ass! Love it! Of course, I'm one of those people who would add flashing eyes and mechanics to make the mouth close over some kids' hands.

Funny you should say that: my original daydream was to design a candy-dispensing robot. I've had that daydream for a while, but I never put in the time on actually figuring out a way to make it work early enough to actually make one.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if it's for sale in shops like, say, a huge chain that begins with the letter 'W'! Don't know it for sure, but it could be!

What a fun idea. We live in too rural of an area to expect any trick-or-treaters, but even in Paris or the villages I have lived in, door-to-door candy seeking is not a big deal hear. Believe you me that the stores still capitalize on the holiday, though.

This year we will try out a local Halloween walk.

I remember Wakanomori telling me that when he was a kid in the UK, they didn't do trick-or-treating there, and someone learned about it, so they decided to give it a try anyway: they got into costumes and went door to door asking for candy. You can imagine how flabbergasted people were and what a strange assortment of stuff they got!

What's the Halloween walk? A walk with ghost stories associated with it?

Ohhh, I remember doing paper mache monster masks in school. :)

We don't trick-or-treat here either, or that is, some kids have started to pick up on it...lol. We have Fastelavn which is a bit similar, but it takes place in February and it's more customary to gives coins (traditionally buns), instead of sweets.

Coins seem a lot more convenient to give out (and to receive) than buns!

That's probably why it changed. Not to mention, buns don't store as well as sweets or coins. :)
