You can see examples of kintsugi--repairing ceramics with gold, so the crack itself becomes a thing of beauty, and the object-with-cracks is celebrated and appreciated--various places online (here's one). This morning I saw pine needles doing kintsugi with cracks in the road, laying down in the crevices and repairing the road very beautifully:

I learned about kintsugi from, of all things, a fanfic, where it was used to symbolize a character's healing from a massive canon trauma. It's really lovely, both metaphorically and not.

Interesting how a thought can't occur to you unless you're primed for it, you know? If I hadn't seen pictures of kintsugi, I might have thought, "how cool that the pine needles are filling in the cracks!" but I wouldn't have thought of the comparison.

Pine-needle kintsugi is a glorious kintsugi. As ever, you have a good eye for spotting these. (Moss-kintsugi in walls is also a good idea. I shall keep an eye out for lichen-kintsugi.)

Great photos! I actually saw them on flickr first and thought the needles looked like gold inlay. Then I came here and found out about kintsugi... How wonderful!

Doesn't it though! I wonder if maybe the craftsmen got their idea looking at things like pine needles in cracks.
