weekend Inktober drawings

I was away over the weekend with very limited Internet, so I'm giving you my weekend's Inktober drawings now--along with critique, because why not?

The theme for October 7 was "shy," and I liked my concept for it, but was disappointed by my execution. I think I either should have worked on it longer (and paid more attention to, like, anatomy) or else gone for something more cartoonish--simpler lines, etc.

The theme for October 8 was "crooked," and I decided on lightning, but my first attempt used Too Many Different Sorts of Crosshatching, plus the lightning itself had a too-solid, not-glowing-enough look to it, like it was made out of plywood and painted white. So I tried again, this time aiming for a more pure-energy lightning... but the result looks... hmm. Not dazzling enough. If it were pencil-tober, I'd do it in pencil; I think I could get what I want with pencil. Maybe.

But you know? I'm having fun in spite of these dissatisfactions. Today's theme is "shriek"--maybe I'll post something before the day goes by.

I like "Shy" even though I see what you mean about the anatomy. But the posture is so true.

"Crooked" actually looks to me like a high view over a river valley.

I thought about that too with regard to "crooked"--I also thought about cracks in dry earth, or in ice if you throw something onto it. But what you say about a river valley seems to me even more on target, because the twists are less sharp.

And thanks re: shy--I'm glad the posture rings true.

Shy is quite lovely.

And I really like the concept of the lightning.

It's fun to play around with different ways of representing things--it's fun to *try again* with something.

'Shy' looks like an illustration from a children's book - probably by Noel Streatfeild...

When I was thinking of the theme, I was asking myself, how can you show "shy" is an internal thing. In other words, although a shy person might feel isolated, it's not so much (at least in my mind) that people are leaving the shy person out, it's that the shy person finds it hard (or impossible) to plunge into an active social scene.

I think some Noel Streatfeild editions had very line-y, scratchy illustrations! (But with good proportions on the people, LOL)

While I agree that these are less strong than your earlier drswings, they're very interesting and good drafts. Thank you for showing them!

Thanks! If you're going to do a doodle/drawing/anything really a day, you have to allow yourself to have less-strong days and more-strong days, and I can, pretty much, but my pride makes me need to say GUYS I KNOW THESE ONES ARE LESS GOOD, OKAY? Like I'm okay with posting less-than-brilliant stuff so long as I can make it clear that I'm not trying to pass them off as brilliant, you know? I should probably worry less about reception ;-)

I hope it's a not-too-painful feeling! I used to not-like the sensation of envy at all (but now I'm better with it).
