Copley Square Protest, Boston
Jan. 29th, 2017 06:33 pmI'm making a T-shirt. On the front it will say, "I was a stranger" and on the back it will say "And you welcomed me." I haven't finished it yet, however, so I just carried a sign that said "Welcome Refugees."
I took a bunch of pictures, but this is my favorite:

This woman's message, at Alewife Station (on the way into Boston), was very moving:

"I am: Arab Irani American"

This looked like the rugs you can see in the prayer room of a mosque. They're set out by a statue of Phillips Brooks, an Episcopal clergyman.

"All Muslims are terrorized by this presidency"

A game of hat-steal going on

There are some more here.

Date: 2017-01-30 02:24 pm (UTC)I was thinking about this the other day, and I think there are basically three types of Trump admin personalities. Moochers, piggybackers and true believers. The first group are there because they think sucking up to Trump will result in some kind of reward for them (Reince, previously Christie, most of the Trump org folks who have come with him); the piggybackers think they can manipulate Trump and govern by proxy, either for evil (Conway, Pence, Bannon) or maybe slightly less evil (Mattis, Kushner). I don't think there are a lot of true believers who think he really will MAGA, but I'm sure there are a couple.

Date: 2017-01-30 04:14 am (UTC)Yeah, ain't it the truth? I keep seeing people I know, and having friendly conversations, and then thinking "...But I wish we didn't have to meet like this."
(I first heard a friend of my family use that line in a speech, after some creeps defaced the synagogue where he was rabbi, and there was a rally of solidarity. My parents told me the hate crime was an isolated incident. In hindsight, that was bullshit.)

Date: 2017-01-30 05:37 am (UTC)Also, it reminds me of the feeling of unity such demonstrations used to give - people putting aside the petty differences to stand for the big issue that matters.

Thank you for the photographs. We weren't in a position to see the prayer rugs.

I was a stranger and you invited me in

Date: 2017-01-31 05:07 pm (UTC)Thank you for posting, and thank you for going. There were protests near me, but I didn't know until too late and had other plans I couldn't change without letting people down. I also think I have to figure out how I want to choose my activism so that I don't burn myself out. All of it seems important though.

Date: 2017-01-31 05:12 pm (UTC)It's like some people volunteer in nursing homes and other people work with small children and other people do campaigns to pick up litter in their neighborhoods and others foster abandoned animals, and others do pro bono legal work--etc.
