I'm making a T-shirt. On the front it will say, "I was a stranger" and on the back it will say "And you welcomed me." I haven't finished it yet, however, so I just carried a sign that said "Welcome Refugees."

I took a bunch of pictures, but this is my favorite:

DSCN7250

This woman's message, at Alewife Station (on the way into Boston), was very moving:

At Alewife station

"I am: Arab Irani American"

Iranian American

This looked like the rugs you can see in the prayer room of a mosque. They're set out by a statue of Phillips Brooks, an Episcopal clergyman.

prayer rugs, Philips Brooks

"All Muslims are terrorized by this presidency"

Terrorized by this presidency

A game of hat-steal going on

a game of steal-the-hat

There are some more here.

It's my pleasure. Everyone's doing something. As Faulkner said in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, "We will not merely endure; we will prevail."

Someone said this: Miller and Bannon are using Trump as a stooge to try to implement a white nationalist fascist state.

Yeah, I saw an elaborate sign to that effect. One guy on Twitter was suggesting that Trump could be baited into getting rid of Bannon if enough people intimated that Bannon was the real power.

I saw this quote elsewhere:
I was thinking about this the other day, and I think there are basically three types of Trump admin personalities. Moochers, piggybackers and true believers. The first group are there because they think sucking up to Trump will result in some kind of reward for them (Reince, previously Christie, most of the Trump org folks who have come with him); the piggybackers think they can manipulate Trump and govern by proxy, either for evil (Conway, Pence, Bannon) or maybe slightly less evil (Mattis, Kushner). I don't think there are a lot of true believers who think he really will MAGA, but I'm sure there are a couple.

Rather than having it bomb at the box office, I'd like to have it removed from theaters.

This executive order is so awful. I cancelled my plans for today so I could go. (I hadn't gone to the women's march last weekend.)

I'll post pictures of the T-shirt when I'm done.

Alas, no -- no one's sign on that subject was as bright as yours! But I'm glad I was in the same place as you even if we didn't see each other. I'm glad we were both there.

See you at the next protest. *bittersweet smile*

Yeah, ain't it the truth? I keep seeing people I know, and having friendly conversations, and then thinking "...But I wish we didn't have to meet like this."

(I first heard a friend of my family use that line in a speech, after some creeps defaced the synagogue where he was rabbi, and there was a rally of solidarity. My parents told me the hate crime was an isolated incident. In hindsight, that was bullshit.)

Thank you for this post.

Also, it reminds me of the feeling of unity such demonstrations used to give - people putting aside the petty differences to stand for the big issue that matters.

Yes: and everyone advises, carry that feeling of unity with you; don't let your opponents divide you. Eyes on the prize: preserving democracy, an open country, rule of law, minority rights.

Feel free: Matthew 25:35,

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me --That's the English Standard Version. The New International Version is even more good for opposing measure that shut people out:

I was a stranger and you invited me in

Thank you for posting, and thank you for going. There were protests near me, but I didn't know until too late and had other plans I couldn't change without letting people down. I also think I have to figure out how I want to choose my activism so that I don't burn myself out. All of it seems important though.

Date: 2017-01-31 05:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] asakiyume.livejournal.com
You're so right about needing to choose so you don't burn out. We can't all do everything. Some things will speak to us more loudly than others, and we should do those--and activism on one front shouldn't be seen as belittling activism on another, and people shouldn't do the thing of "Why are you doing X and not Y??"

It's like some people volunteer in nursing homes and other people work with small children and other people do campaigns to pick up litter in their neighborhoods and others foster abandoned animals, and others do pro bono legal work--etc.
