You know how dreams can be hard to recall? You can think you have them--you can still be reverberating with them--but then when you try to go through, piece by piece, they melt away? Well, I had thoughts over the last few days of things I wanted to share, and they've gone the way of dreams.

Like, one was cars with names that are also . . . . What. Oh, I remember: math terms. Nissan Numerator (also Nissan Denominator). Toyota Sine, Cosine, and Tangent. Ford Asymptote.

There were other things to share, maybe about apple blossoms? Or books? Or fan art for Ancillary Mercy (like this or this of Sphene)? But they have vanished from my mind like morning mist on a sunny day.

So here's something I thought, though. When people tell me about their conflicts with others, or when I think over my own, I'm always imagining tweaks in the scripts of the players to arrive at happier conclusions. Sometimes even in an actual conversation, I'll find myself saying, "Say XX, and then I can say YY." But of course people prefer to come up with their own lines, thank you very much! With novels, yes: I get to decide all the lines. But real life is that extra bit muddy and unpredictable. And then I thought, well, and even novels benefit from unpredictability--not so much that the story seems random, but enough that it's breathtaking. At least in places.

I don't have super vivid dreams like I did when young, but I did have one a few days ago in which I was thinking over things I'd learned about my dreams. That was odd.

I love the lit pepper!

It was a dream retrospective! Your brain was too tired for new programming. Or maybe it just wanted to celebrate all the good moments.

There were no good moments. It was a stress dream--but I managed to shipwreck the old migraine trigger (banging my head against a wall as hard as I could, then getting mad because I couldn't do it hard enough) by recollecting that it was a trigger--and recognizing that this was a stress dream in the middle of the dream.

That really stinks--that it was all bad, I mean. But let's hear it for recognizing old triggers and avoiding them. If a dream has to put you through unpleasant paces, it's good to subvert it as early as possible. Like hanging up on telemarketers.

That is some great fan art for Ancillary Mercy! Thank you.

Backlit pepper windows are surprisingly beautiful.

Isn't it great? The same artist does an excellent Anaander Miaanai and a very cute Lt. Tisarwat, too.

Ah, melting, misty thoughts, I know you so well.

And then I thought, well, and even novels benefit from unpredictability

They do! I love it when an author takes dialogue (or scenes, what-have-you) in unpredictable--but still-plausible--directions.

And may I just say, WHAT GALL of Wall Part to use your art like that!!!! As long as they put your name in the title, they think they are good? Did you click the "Report a Violation" link?

No no! That's not my art (I wish!) I just reblogged it. I did do fan art of Sphene, but it was much different. No, that artist is able to do digital art, something I don't have the equipment to do.
