It's from the final monologue of the movie American Beauty, which is a strange film in that it chronicles a thoroughly depressing set of life circumstances in a wealthy California suburb, and (without the opening and closing monologues) would feel like a hapless and futile story of a hapless and futile man trying to hopelessly beat his wings against the caged existence he and his neighbors have so carefully constructed for themselves.

I'm not sure if I'd like it as much as I do if I were to see it for the first time now. But at the time it came out, in 1999, I was about to graduate high school, and was so completely terrified that that sort of rail-led go-to-college-get-a-job-buy-fancy-things-be-a-good-consumer-and-lose-any-passion-for-life existence was the only 'safe' option open to me. And while the movie wasn't precisely encouraging on that front...it did wonders in that it seemed to directly recognize and address those fears, and reminded me that there was more to life, that even if I did choose to follow a similar path I didn't have to do so blindly, as these characters had.
