Sometimes the most ordinary of places is beautiful. This parking lot, with those big clouds, in fresh after-rain light.

It's just a parking lot, but there's a big sky up above it and trees on its margins, and even its asphalt seems . . . all right.

(It's another phone picture. My phone takes impressionist paintings. My phone's name is Cezanne.)

I had to pick up the healing angel from a friend's house. On our way home, we passed a bus-hive. All the school buses were there, all yellowy-orange and black, like fancy hornets. We thought we might see the queen, but we didn't; we only saw the worker buses. (A queen, as you probably know, is just a worker bus that has been fed royal petroleum jelly.) I didn't have the presence of mind to take a picture, but this picture, though it's from more than a thousand miles away, has something of the feel.

Bus-hive in Ann Arbor, Michigan

And hey, while I was searching for appropriate bus-hive pictures, look what I found: mini edible school buses made out of Twinkies.

Those are amazing.

But since they're twinkies, I think "maybe they're not going to school at all, but on a post-apocalyptic road trip"

a post-apocalyptic road trip--into the dark depths of a child's stomach!

I love the clouds. Those are mood clouds. :)

That really does look like a swarm of worker buses, LOL.

Ooooh, my gosh, those Twinkie buses are so cute.

They are so billowy--just looking at them makes me feel like I'm going to float.

The Twinkie buses were so unexpected! I want to try making them now.

I get so nervous around bus hives. I always think they're about to swarm at any second.

Yeah, unlike bees, you can't smoke them to calm them down. On the contrary, when they start swarming, THEY smoke YOU.

It's so bright and clear--in the photo it's kind of abstracted, but IRL--as clear as if you'd lifted up a second, muddy eyelid and could see everything more brightly.

I have an illustrated book at home on my bedside table that depicts the secret life of buses. I've had it for at least 25 years, and it's always been by my bed, just in case I wanted to thumb through it. It's called "Bus".

Maybe I'll take some pictures of it when I get home.

This afternoon I dreamt about an wasp hives. They'd taken up on the inside of my mother-in-law's house. In the door frames, the corners of the pantries, just everywhere. Folks were outside having a party while I was trying to sleep, I tried to get someone to just acknowledge that the things were there, that they were dangerous. Eventually someone grudgingly gave me some feedback which amounted to a "yup, but deal with it in the morning". I woke up from this dream with very stiff arms and a pounding heart.

I blame Stephen King for creating in my subconscious the idea that wasps and their nests represent some lingering or hidden evil just waiting to get out at you.

I have similar dreams about carpenter ants, of them invisibly taking the house down around me. It's always a relief to wake up.
