They made a new sidewalk near here; they made it of cement instead of tarmac, and a squirrel left its footprints in the corner of one square. It did this after the cement had set.

You're thinking I misremembered. Of course it had to have happened when the cement was still wet. Maybe, but I don't think so. I think maybe the squirrel had such deep concerns, such ponderous thoughts, that his feet left impressions, even in the fast-hardening cement. A weighty, metaphysical squirrel. Any hawk that tried to swipe him that day would have come away empty-taloned. Had the squirrel's mood not lightened, we perhaps would have found tiny, but deep, pits across the nearby fields and in the woods.

Do you ever rub your head with your hands when you're tired, trying to massage away your own weighty thoughts, or just the tensions of the day? It is more effective to go to a mind masseuse. She knows just where and how to touch and stroke and knead and press to clear away thoughts, concerns, anxieties, nerves--the lot. But also memories, purpose, ambitions, and drives, so be careful. Read the sign on the door: "Have you backed up your memories?" Best to start with just a light massage, or else to get a really good masseuse, who can work free a day's malaise without depriving you of anything essential.

This is a wonderful conceit.

I was thinking the other day how much I wanted this service. And if you could train to offer it, you'd have work wherever you went.

The squirrel probably thought "in the future, people will see this and they'll wonder how a squirrel put his hand print in solid cement and bring him back with SCIENCE! and he'll be their new god."

We should start making votive statues right now.

Had a lot of dreams of soft, soft ground and a need to walk very, very lightly. Also of having pockets full of stones. I could use a mind masseuse...

Maybe it was you that left the footprints--your dream self was a squirrel.

You could definitely use a good mind masseuse.

Watch out for the backstreet masseuse who promises existential relief and delivers Paris Hilton.

I don't remember that bit! (But then... I wouldn't, would I?)

I shall get you a recommendation for a restorative massage--those can replace things that have been massaged out.

You are a mind masseuse with your alternate universes. Perhaps the squirrel was weighed down with thoughts and the metaphor became reality, but a more mundane explanation is that he was from the planet Krypton, where squirrels have a higher density.

A friend for Superman! I like it. And now I'm wondering whether Superman himself leaves marks in carpets, tarmac, cement and so on when he's walking around.

Not only would that hawk have gone away empty handed; that hawk would have been sucked into the squirrel's density. That hawk would have been ACCRETED like space matter to a black hole. That squirrel would have assumed the hawk, thereby becoming a squawk.

And, being a squawk, its mood would have FORTHWITH LIGHTENED. Because anything called a squawk cannot take itself too seriously.

It then went to school for mind massage, and became wise and gentle as the Buddha.

Ooh, a squawk could use both hands *and* wings in its massage.

I think I might have something in common with your ponderous* squirrel these days. ;)

Why is ponderous not like wondrous??
It's ponderous to wondrous, and yet,
it can also be wonderous if one ponders enough.

:-D

So true--and see how this floats and sinks, pondering and wondering!
