"STAY ON TRAIL," the sign commands.
Or does it warn?
Or does it plead?

stay on the trail

"Otherwise," it might add, "You will find yourself Elsewhere." Else, Elsewhere

elsewhere

A cold-iron road runs through this land...

the rail in mist

but there are tunnels under it:

tunnel under the tracks

Here are pails of detritus from angelic rail repair:

old rail fasteners

And here are the footprints of a traveler who walks alongside, not on, the iron road:

raccoon tracks

Who/whatever left those footprints could not have read the sign, so we hope that it didn't stray too far...

Any idea what animal left those tracks?

I'm pretty sure it was a raccoon.

They look like raccoon feet to me.

Ah, of course. I've been too far away from raccoons for too long, I guess. :-S

Fortunately, raccoons habitually tread in several worlds at once.

Love this bit of wisdom--thanks for reminding me!

I'm getting very little snow here in Southeaster Wisconsin. Your pictures are reminding me of a trip I took to the Lake Michigan shore a few years ago to photograph the snow and ice.

It makes me happy to see your pictures and read your words, as usual. I love finding myself elsewhere.

Great photos! I hope they also included a "you can get off now" sign at the end...

Once on the path, YOU MAY NEVER LEAVE!

Prints of a fairy-raccoon! I'm sure like other fairies, they cannot bear to go near iron. :D

They are tricksters, though, who will find ways round even the most *ahem* ironclad of restrictions.

All those extraneous Js removed by the rail angels...perhaps they think a soft G will suffice?

Excellent raccoon tracks. So distinct, I think they must be a diversion, a false trail.

I know right?! All those Js. The different alphabet letters have different lobbyists, and the J lobby was lagging in the fundraising... here are the dire results.

And you could be right about the raccoon tracks. They really are suspiciously clear.

Perhaps the Angels have been turning Jails into Rails. Or Jaunts into Haunts. (Or Aunts?)

Maybe they are angelic doctors, removing the J to find out what ails the rails.

Actually, when it's misty like this, it's because it's getting warmer!

Those pails look as if they are full of used numbers. Maybe they were manufactured back in the analog age.

I suppose in a few generations, people walking this route will see digital buckets full of pixels and binary code... or binary code that forms pixels?

Wonderful pics as ever.
