Sometimes when I see him sprawled out on the black sky, I want to lie down next to him, my shoulder nestled under his arm, and kiss both his cheeks.

But other times, like tonight, I see him, and he's all bravado and threats, arms flung wide, like he owns the night, and those times I say to him, "You won't catch me; I'll slip through the spaces between the stars and duck under the skeleton bushes, and you'll never find me."

Aww, he's just in love, the big palooka. But he hasn't got the nerve up to talk to the girl, so he's just messing around, acting tough, hoping she'll notice. Give him a friendly jab to the jaw, and he'll just melt, the big softy.

Maybe I'll try that--but when I have my own bow and quiver of arrows, just to be safe.

I'm very fond of Orion too, and always look for him. But you know, I've never seen him from this angle before. In fact, long before I thought of him as 'him' or 'Orion', I knew him as The Saucepan — and was fond of that homely depiction too. (You think it's a sword? Looks like a pot handle to me, the way I normally see it, and the belt is the bottom of the pot.)

"The Saucepan," eh? Like the Big Dipper! (Not sure if you can see that in the Southern Hemisphere?)

Orion has always been one of my favorite constellations. Used to spend much time looking at the stars.

Orion is one of the few constellations I recognize. He dares a body not to recognize him.

Orion was the first thing to make me not afraid of the dark... outside anyway. In my nightmares, if I make it outside, I am safe.

What a wonderful thought. With Orion as an ally, you should indeed be safe.

I recognized Orion first of all the constellations when I was a boy. He was then as he was tonight.

Not mine, I hasten to say, but yes: it was the first one, as I scanned through Google images, that got Orion reclining, which is how I most often see him.

Adrienne Rich, Orion (http://www.americanpoems.com/poets/adrienne_rich/3838)

The last two stanzas:

Pity is not your forte.
Calmly you ache up there
pinned aloft in your crow's nest,
my speechless pirate!
You take it all for granted
and when I look you back

it's with a starlike eye
shooting its cold and egotistical spear
where it can so least damage.
Breathe deep! No hurt, no pardon
out here in the cold with you
you with your back to the wall.

One of the most beautiful and powerful poems I've ever read.

Ooh, yes, similar! I love that last line--you with your back to the wall. The wall of the cosmos.

I'll check out the rest of the poem.

That's a great pic of Orion. I'm a terrible constellation-spotter, fyi. I competed in the "Astrology" portion of Science Olympiad as a last-minute insertion and... needless to say my (very smart) friend and I were staring at the planetarium dome saying "WTF!"

Oh also: I want to name a cat Orion because of Men in Black. Remember, the galaxy is in Orion's belt!

Why do I have the feeling that Orion is the sort of celestial being who might quite handily romance both of us simultaneously? (And numerous others as well, no doubt!)
