Mrs. Grieve says, The rootstock is thick, round and fleshy, slightly curved at ends, and contains an orange-red juice. In other words, when cut, it bleeds.

It was used as a dye and as medicine; it can, like most such plants, also be used as a poison.

I used to own a copy of Mrs. Grieve's book. I wonder if I still have it with all the moves and boxes and whatnot?

I have it in two volumes, but I love that it's now available online, too--makes it easy to refer people to it. It's a great book! I hope are able to find it.
