The front door...

....and the back door.
back door

By the front door, bloodroot:
bloodroot

Mrs. Grieve says, The rootstock is thick, round and fleshy, slightly curved at ends, and contains an orange-red juice. In other words, when cut, it bleeds.

It was used as a dye and as medicine; it can, like most such plants, also be used as a poison.

No one was there when I called, so I'm not sure!

Whoever lives there... I wonder why they need the bloodroot so handy? And an escape route right there, too. Either good fairies, or very bad ones.

It looks cozy! According to the almanac, from the bloodroot we can deduce that whoever lives there has fleshy excrescences and um, a torpid liver. Watch out!

I thought it was a mini puffball and I didn't want to release the spores.

(Cue mad landowner shouting, "release the hounds spores!")

Maybe, as [livejournal.com profile] mguilbord suggests below, it's for their torpid liver. Poor lazy liver :D

I've always fancied living inside a tree**--ever since reading My Side of the Mountain.

"Fleshy excrescences"--you have to love the way people wrote. (Actually, I guess medical jargon is still rather this way...)

**Or on a tree. Still excited for more treehouse pictures as your project advances!

I used to own a copy of Mrs. Grieve's book. I wonder if I still have it with all the moves and boxes and whatnot?

I have it in two volumes, but I love that it's now available online, too--makes it easy to refer people to it. It's a great book! I hope are able to find it.
