Today it was the laundry basket's secret code that I felt tempted to decipher:

It's like writing you see in a dream and then struggle to write down as you wake up.

I went for a walk in the woods on New Year's Day with wakanomori--our destination was a beaver pond. It was late: we had to walk briskly to get there and back before dark. On our way we met an older man coming in the opposite direction. He had a polished, painted walking stick. I admired it, and he said he'd painted it himself--the moose, the man in the kayak, the dark pines--all things that were important to him. And at the top, the colors of a coral or king snake, because, he said, he loved snakes. He had beautiful eyes and an accent that reminded Wakanomori of Dorset farmers. He allowed as to how there were a lot of people on the trails that day--but for us, he was the first. (We met several others after that. On our way back, Wakanomori said, "I wonder how many more humans we'll encounter." I gave him a sidelong look. "Your disguise is slipping," I said.)

The mist was rising by that point:

Perhaps you're in the mood for a change of pace?

We went for a walk through a landscape transformed by beavers. It's always been marshy; they have turned it into their own habitat. There are frogs in here, and red-winged blackbirds flying over the reedy parts, and redstarts singing in the skunk-cabbage parts.

We saw a great tree, SO TALL, that will soon be down:

another view of the tree being gnawed

Evidence (pond-facing side):

Some extra gnawing (trail-facing side):

bites on the other side

Again, that tree is TALL:

So think of beavers. There was no pond before but there is a pond now.

I picked some violets after a run today--I saw them on a hillside, a really rich, deep purple. At home I have lots of violets too, but the purple ones are more washed out. Then there are the white ones with purple veins, and best of all, the speckled ones.

Here they all are in a little vase:

And here is a photo of one of those trees of gold that grow in fairy woods, along with trees of silver and trees of crystal. This one has been felled by a beaver. Look how beautiful its bark is.

And here is a tree that has been gnawed at three different spots. Three beavers sharing a meal? Or one beaver not satisfied with the taste and hoping it gets better if he tries a different spot?

[livejournal.com profile] wakanomori and I went on a New Year's walk yesterday, and we saw signs of beavers

And out in the lake was the beaver lodge:

"What do you think it's like on the inside of the beaver lodge?" Wakanomori asked last night, when we were heading to bed.

"Well, I'm sure there's a sewing machine," I said.

More broadly, something like this. Excuse the blurring on the left--I scanned this Pauline Baynes illustration from my copy of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

Here, courtesy of the University of Vermont, is what it's more likely to look like:

(More pictures here.)

And here's a diagram from liviniginthewetlands.pbworks.com:

... If people lived in beaver lodges, then C.S. Lewis's imagination would be perfect. But for beavers themselves, the lodge as it is is cozy and just right. Imagine beaver stories that conceive of humans as beaver-pomorphized creatures, still living in dry-land houses, yes, but with moats all around them so the humano-beavers can get in swimming, because what kind of life doesn't have swimming, and of course humano-beavers will eat like beaver-beavers, a diet of the soft bits of trees like willows and aspens, as well as water plants like cattails--but not fish. (Sorry, C.S. Lewis; beavers don't fish or eat fish.) Humano-beavers, like beaver-beavers, will, in beaver children's tales, mate for life, and both parents will devotedly raise their offspring.
