Yesterday, December 23, I did an angel with tidings of great joy. I had big, big ambitions for this picture! Unfortunately sometimes the execution doesn't quite live up to the plan. I can say about this angel's face... it has that naive look. Yes. Naive. Here are two views--one of the angel himself, and one photographed upside down and flipped (so the head and not the bottom of the robe are larger), in relation to the shepherd picture:

I firmly believe that angel is Up to No Good and it is fortunate for us all that he is now buried in snow and unable to continue his mischievous rounds.

I like the colors on the angel.

Candy eyeballs are awesome! I bought an identical-looking packet this summer and made different kinds of animal cupcakes for a children's party. I like them on the gingerbread men, though -- kind of a friendly goofy look.

Thanks re: angel--I was looking at renaissance angels for references, and some of the ones by Fra Angelico had amazing rainbow wings.

Re: the gingerbread man, I also like the fact that the red icing-glue gives him a kind of sleepless, harried quality to his goofiness--it seems really appropriate for how we're all living/feeling.

I love candy eyeballs. Before I found them commercially available I used to make them out of royal icing.

I don't think the angel looks naive. More primitive, in an old-art and not an Americana sense. And I enjoy how it seems to be endorsing exercise.

The candy eyeballs are ***fierce***!!! And so apt for a ritual St. Lucia Day food!

I was so interested in the effect of flipping the photo! The way the act of photography, and then manipulating photography, affects the 3-D reality. It made me realize how powerful photography is... I mean I knew? But it made me know again, in a new way.

The eyeballs are remarkable ^_^ Tell me why they're apt for a ritual St. Lucia Day food? And which is the ritual food? Is it gingerbread, generally, or gingerbread men, or gingerbread stars? ... These are things that I can look up online, but I like hearing the answers from you.
