Between tags, which I confess I'm not that fond of, and beautiful murals (such as this new one by the street artist who goes by the name "guache_art"), there are the fancy, elaborate versions of tags that you can see--for instance, on train cars, like these ones parked in B-town.

Are the train cars in service or retired?

In service! These were with some other cars all loaded up with lumber from Canada. They sideline them here until the right train comes along to take them the rest of the way to wherever they're going.

--This art is *not* by the young and talented graffiti artists of B-town ;-)

Working trains are one of the ways I feel a place is alive.

Train cars are where I first encountered graffiti, outside bathroom stalls, where the artistic and linguistic standards were low.

I always liked them.

The lettering can get so fancy, and it's fun to see what colors are used and what effects they go for. As pigshitpoet said over on the LJ side of things, it's like a rolling street art exhibit.

I liked the balloony shiny letters. For that matter, I enjoyed the orthography of a bunch of the tags. And the illegibility combined with the handsomeness always pleased me, somehow.

I'd *like* to like tags, but I don't really. Though I do like recognizing ones I knew and seeing them in different locations.

Which part, the wanting to like something that you don't really like, or enjoying recognizing something familiar, or both?

I was thinking of wishing I liked something I don't. :D

In my experience, it's especially wistful making if people you like all like something that you don't care for.

How fun! I remember how the subway cars in NYC were covered in graffiti like this back in the early '80s. Not so much anymore!

I'm glad the in-train subway maps aren't covered in graffiti any more!

We noticed (I had the healing angel with me when I went back to take pictures) with some of this graffiti that they'd put up shields over key information when they were spraying so that those bits wouldn't get covered up. (The hand with fingers in a V-sign is **not** doing that--it *does* cover up information.)

Yeah, I feel complicated about graffiti--I can enjoy it, but.. I enjoy its absence too? Freight cars are a good place for graffiti--freight trains aren't something you're going to be riding on daily (... probably...), so it's not an assault on the eyes of people who don't like it. And freight trains aren't trying for a sleek or beautiful look.
