Of course, just a day before I need to start the slow process of traveling to Readercon (first a journey to my dad's to pick him up), I'm inundated with work I need to do. I may have to take some of it with me to Readercon, which I haaaaaate doing. (I like typing all those a's though.)

But I'm still going to share some photos. This morning, as I set out for my walk, there was a whizzzzzz, like an electric car, only what it actually was was a guy with a backpack, bandana, and cigarette, sailing past on a skateboard! I was so delighted. He got off the skateboard when he reached the big downhill at the end of my street, so I was able to chase after him (shameless!) and catch him on the boardwalk. I said he'd looked super cool sailing by, and could I take his picture? And he said yes! And so I did, and thanked him.

And here's the other photo. It looks like a tiny mud patty, but it's really a very flat toad. We've seen him before, camouflaging himself nicely on this rail, and once even hanging out on the window of our door. A very chill toad, with pleasant golden eyes, which he opened at the musical sound of my camera turning on.

So yes, I'll be away at Readercon this weekend, and since I don't have any mobile devices, you probably won't hear much from me. And when I get back, you still may not hear much from me, because of work being so demanding--but then again, I like it here and come even when I'm busy, so who knows.

PS I apologize for not leaving comments today. It's partly work, but partly LJ is giving me nothing but 503 varnish errors. I hope it gets over that soon.

The errors stopped for me. It's been about an hour since they started.

For some weird reason, my journal stayed up during the plague of errors.

In any case, I'll probably only update once while you're away. Maybe twice.

If you update twice that will be FIVE entries I need to catch up on. But I'm planning to look at one or two this evening.

If you read two, read powderblue and either lemondrop or cherrypop

Yes, though I think I'd call him flatty toad, the way he flattens himself out.

I really wish I could go to Readercon, especially since it's so nearby, but it's always the weekend I go to Sirius Rising festival. Have a blast!

It's also usually (always?) the weekend of Connecticon, which my daughters have been to a couple of times... i guess there are only so many weekends in the year! I'll have a good time--you have a great time at Sirius Rising, too!

Strange things happen on the internet! (What's a varnish error?) I've received - one this week, but earlier too - brusque PMs that say only "you do not have authorisation to view this message", which seems unnecessarily recursive and chilly.

I like your toad very much indeed, and I envy the careless ease with which you type your aaaaaaaas. :)

Have fun at at Readercon, and good driving to you!

I think that message you got, which I've sometimes gotten too, happens when a person posts and entry and then decides to make it private (or to limit who sees it). But it does have a cold feeling, because you get a sense of being excluded. I did the opposite this week: posted a private entry (that no one could see but me) and then changed the settings to public once I was ready to go live. It was the salamander entry, actually: I wanted to wait until I got permission from Urbpan to use his photo (or, if he had preferred me not to, I would have just linked to his entry). But I hate to think of LJ notifying people when I post a private entry--that sounds like a bad plan--so I hope it wasn't my entry that triggered the message about no authorization.

The a's! I should save them up and give them to you!

And thanks for the good wishes re: Readercon (and I'm glad you liked the toad; he's very sweet).

I don't think it's that (a public-then-private entry) because how would they know who to send them to? But when you get back we could test-drive the idea, if you like I think it's just a glitch, though.

Oh, how I love your toad. Its expression is priceless.

The skateboard guy is very cute indeed, but can't really compete with the toad.

I hope you have a lovely Readercon.

I love the idea of a skateboarder/toad competition. It showcases the idiocy of competition in nearly all cases.

Oh, that would be hilarious. I actually agree with you about competition, and was merely trying to express the extreme appeal of this particular toad.

Oh my. The 1960s' series was a highly acclaimed science fiction series. Brilliantly written. Starred most of the best actors of the 20th century. It seems impossible you haven't seen every episode. I will post the intro on my LJ.

Hope you are enjoying (enjoyed?) your con. I wish I could go to Sirens. Maybe someday...but even as I type that, I have a feeling of "neverness." So...

I love your shamelessness. You rock. :D

The con I was just at was Readercon--Sirens is in October. Maybe you still could? ... or maybe one year.

Yeah, I'm pretty shameless--about some things, anyway.
