Here's the toboggan run from two-thirds of the way down, looking up at the top.

And here is the remaining bit, heading into the swamp:

Wakanomori and I went down this lots of times this afternoon. His dream is to have the path lead eventually to the apartments on the other side of the swamp. ... I don't think we can get enough momentum to travel that far, but I like how far we do travel.

Yeah, they could. Here's Mount Cambridgemanjaro.

Cambridgemanjaro, I love it! Where is that in Cambridge?

It looks like the MIT campus.

When I lived in Minnesota, we used to make our toboggan runs that looked just like yours, but then we'd get the hoses out and spray them with water so the trough would be icy like glass. The toboggans then would go much further and faster.

But ice is so ... unforgiving on bones! What I like about it when it's just snowy is that it's relatively soft. Even when it gets pretty packed down, the way it is in the photos, it's still not that hard.

This morning, in our current blizzard, another seven inches or so have already fallen on it. We'll have to re-flatten it.

That looks like great fun! I like the impermanence of the whole thing too - the idea that you build wonderful creations and then next year you get to start over.

Yes! That's absolutely true! The great runs live on only in memory. I remember after the blizzard of 78, my friend's dad made a run in her back yard that went *all over*--I mean, it went this way and that like a roller coaster. ... But gone come spring.

Impermanence is under appreciated. Thank you!

That looks absolutely breathtaking! So much, and so dry and crunchy-looking, and so white (yes, I know snow is, but it really is). I'm not too sure that I like the idea of the toboggan-ride ending in the swamp, though. :)

By the way, I looked at the scenes from the movie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHqMFEcL-pk) Yesterday. It looks like a very moving, very tough-minded film. I hope I can get to see it.
editing to add: also, great to see/hear a film in Zulu. Film is such a powerful medium, and too many languages are unable to get representation there.

Oh it is *so* much fun. And what's remarkable is that it has stayed so cold that the snow has stayed soft. Usually, you get a warm period, and the snow melts some and then hardens to the consistency of styrofoam when it refreezes. But we've been below freezing the whole time, so it's remained grainy/fluffy.

And yes, I adored hearing the Zulu. I too wish we could have more movies in more languages.

Oh, I haven't been on a sledge in... decades. *sighs*

A swift steep twisting descent into a swamp - the very definition of fun.

I have never sledded. :(

Never? That's terrible! We must get you to a snowy hill post haste! It's a wonderful, wonderful feeling.

Seriously. I wish you could step into a closet and come out here (after the storm ends. The wind is freaking me out a bit.)

There is a hill behind Chun Woo's school that's reliably reputed to be excellent for sledding. And I go Chun Woo a cheap plastic sled a couple of years ago, which we unfortunately tried out on a not-steep-enough hill. We just need to get out to the Van Arsdale hill, or another of the many dandy hills hereabout.

I've been thinking a lot about you. Not sure how far from Boston you are or how much snow you've gotten. This lightened my heart so very much. ::hugs you so tight:: I've had a migraine since Saturday. I think it is finally breaking. I have the fog from after and am happy to feel it roll in. Dream me up something special from your winter wonderland, would you? We have snow headed in today with a wintry mix later.

You know the ice lantern I sent you a picture of? Well I tried making another one, but letting it freeze longer, so it would have thicker walls--and it froze solid. Now it's a crystal ball :-P
