Train tracks run behind my neighborhood, where I walk. I often see trains go by: long New England Central Railroad freight trains and the Amtrak passenger train--the Vermonter.

On Christmas I learned that in January, the route of the Vermonter will change--it will no longer travel the length of track near my house. We've often talked of riding it, but our chance was fast disappearing, so on Saturday, December 27, [livejournal.com profile] wakanomori and I bought tickets to ride from Springfield, Massachusetts, to Amherst. Here are some photos of that journey (to see more in the series, or to see any of the pictures bigger, click through to Flickr):

Cars, you will stop for us!

The first is near where I waved at [livejournal.com profile] janni when she was riding the train and passing through; the second shows the woods between my neighborhood and the tracks--where you and I often walk, [livejournal.com profile] littlemoremasks-- and the third is from the railway bridge that was the sixth bridge in my story "Seven Bridges." I've travelled under that bridge on foot, bicycle, and car, and over the bridge on foot and now by train.

And here is a picture of the setting sun that Amtrak liked so much it asked to use it--I said yes.

And here we are in Amherst. I heard other people talking about how this was near to the last journey. Others were also commemorating it, as you can see.

Then we drove home in the deepening sunset

I get frustrated trying and failing to catch some of the scenes that unwind past the train windows - yout evening light pictures are a triumph!

Will the train not run at all, or will it have a different route?

It will continue to run, but instead of going through Amherst, it will go through Northampton. The new route makes more sense as it puts the cities of Holyoke and Greenfield on the same route, which will (eventually) be good for commuters. But it's a shame for Amherst!

Because I am an utter transportation geek, I went and looked up info on the route change.

Turns out that it's actually a restoration of the original Connecticut River routing; Amherst was added to replace the missing Northampton stop when it was rerouted off of that line. The Conn River Line was limited to 10 mph service because the owner, Guilford, didn't want to pay for repairs to keep it in spec for higher speeds. Instead, Amtrak ran through Palmer in a move that required reversing the train in order to switch lines to continue northward....

More recently, MassDOT bought the CRL and used stimulus funds to rehabilitate it for restored passenger traffic. There are also plans for a new station in Holyoke.

Yup, we sat through that reversing-the-train business. It also caused us a real "d'oh" moment because we'd chosen seats assuming it would be going straight--which meant we were badly placed for the portion of the trip after Palmer--which was exactly the portion that was most important to us. We ended up in the cafe car, where we could sit on the right side--and the windows were bigger, so it was perfect.

As a transportation geek, you might appreciate this super-awesome route map my son did for the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority--it's got all the bus lines, etc. (You can click through to see it bigger)

He has been making maps like this since he was seven or eight years old--subway lines for made-up places, and later, prospective maps for real places. Before he got his current job, he designed schedules--just on spec--for the PVTA. I am just thrilled to pieces that he has a job where he can do this stuff *for real*, where his passion is appreciated.

I am riding my desk watching it change from drizzle to sleet to snow and back again with a pile of stuff to do and the comfort of The Colorado Kid by Stephen King playing on audio as I work. I also have a Starbucks white chocolate mocha. It is going to be a good, productive day. ::hugs::

You've got snow down there, and we're bare! It's cold-cold today, though--I'll make myself an imitation chocolate mocha and drink alongside you. Yay, productivity!

It didn't stick. It just fell. I missed seeing it, but I caught the sleet. ::hugs:: whew what a day. Now to the grocery store.

Those are very beautiful photos. The news that the Vermonter will no longer run through Amherst caused me to shout, "Crap!" loudly enough to alarm [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel. The station closed the day after your ride.

People were saying it was the second-to-last day, but I wanted to believe it was going to keep running right through to December 31 ;_;

There was so much nostalgia and affection in the air at the Amherst station.

Me too! Wakanomori burst my bubble a little by gently pointing out that every day Amtrak apparently asks lots of people if it can use their photos, but even so, I can dream :-)

Wonderful photos! I love Amtrak travel, and now I'm bummed that I'll never get to ride the stretch of track through Amherst.

I have to say, it's a charming hour-stretch of train travel, and I'm very sorry to lose it. But traveling up the Connecticut river will surely be lovely too--I'm looking forward to trying out the new route one day.

Love your icon!

No worries! I don't even try to see all of the tweets that go by; it's always just a snapshot of what happens to be scrolling by when I look. (I don't have a smartphone, so I only see twitter when I'm at my desk and happen to glance at the feed)
