Little Springtime was cleaning out her room and decided she probably didn't need her collection of bottle caps anymore.

I, however, still need her collection of bottle caps. Bottle caps are so wonderful. I want to make something with them. One day. For now, I just want to admire them.

Using the Em icon because Em's little sister Tammy collects bottle caps.

This is lovely! I was hoping for suggestions.

... I got to thinking about *how* one uses the bottle caps--for their noise-making capacity, like here, or for their color, like in [livejournal.com profile] yamamanama's suggestion for a mosaic, or as complete in themselves (like if you were to make earrings out of a single bottle cap (one per earring), or as components in a larger whole (like when you use them in the mosaic, or to decorate things.

I've seen them embedded in footstools, where they make excellent armoring!

Yes, they certainly would! Long ago I saw chairs that were decorated with them--looked beautiful.

How colorful they are!

I collected as a child, before there were cans and everything came out of bottles. :)

They are *so* colorful.

Did you make things with your bottle caps?

Those are beautiful! All the different colors... I especially like the final close-up photo, right up against the crimping on the sides.

Thanks! I like that in that photo, there's a scratchy effect (coming from taking the picture through the plastic of the container they're in) which makes it look like a very old, long ago picture.

What sorts of things have you thought of making?

A mosaic, perhaps, or samurai armor.

We thought of making armor from the lids of frozen juice containers, linked together, but we never got around to doing it (we did save up a whole lot of lids, though)

I'm seconding the lagerphone suggestion; it could be a small handheld version. :)

Handheld shakers and ringers would be an excellent idea.

When I was a child, my father told stories about Sir James J. Jimsie, who served the good Queen Gwendolyn G. Gwennie*. At the beginning of every story, after learning the basics of the problem he faced, Sir James ate a simply vast breakfast, of which every item was listed. At the end, Queen Gwendolyn awarded him a medal made of a pop bottle top and "a kiss on both cheeks." (I use quotation marks because it's a bit like Leacock's hero wo leapt on his and rode off in all directions.)

* In one multi-part saga Sir James fought on behalf of Queen Gwendolyn against the wicked Queen Catherine C. Cathy. That lent an additional thrill to the stories, as my mother' name is Catherine....

What a fun story! I love that all the items in the breakfast were listed--I love particulars like that. (And it reminds me somehow of the king in AA Milne's poetry who just wants a little bit of butter for his bread.)

Love it! I used to collect bottle caps.

For a time my family lived in Sierra Leone (a country now unfortunately in the news due to the Ebola breakout.) The water wasn't safe so people drank soft drinks (Seven Up, Fanta, Pepsi...) I had quite a collection of bottle caps and being the weird kid I was displayed them proudly on top of a chest of drawers. To me they were like prizes.

I wish I could have hung out with weird-kid you!!

I do remember that you've lived all over--how long were you in Sierra Leone? And how old were you at the time? (You may have told me this before, but can you say again?)

I was 12 at the time. My family stayed 2 years. It was 1985.

I am ten years older than you ^_^

What a wonderful experience. And how your heart must break for all the nation's been through since then. But it will recover. I follow a blog on Tumblr that posts daily-life shots from Sierra Leone.

SL has had far more than its share of troubles. I hope and pray that the recovery happens soon.
