Evacuation centers--September 6 in Pen Pal

Churches often provide shelter in the event of natural disasters. Here Jah-Torrian Spriggs, age three, takes shelter in Triumph Church in Beaumont, Texas, in advance of Hurricane Ike in 2008:

Schools also offer shelter. . . Here is ten-year-old Christyanna Coffman, who evacuated to Blue Ridge High School when wildfires threatened her Arizona home in 2011.

That church doesn't look too safe. Too many windows, a big roof without supports, Thin straight walls with few shear structures. I hope they all came out of that Philippine hurricane OK. I remember it was devastating.

I think this is in the aftermath of the typhoon. **tons** of people were displaced--I think these might be some of those displaced people. (I should go back and check...)

Right now it's the most delicious sound of a drenching rain. I can't hear the katydids anymore, but ooh, I do love this sound. Are you having rain too?

What a lovely assortment of photos, each giving a different feel just like the emotions one must experience during an evacuation/relocation.

Katydid: a nickname my mother has for me, along with "Katy Bells." :P Not for any musical reason, just a play on "quela" (kayla).

Our local sports ground is also a bushfire evacuation centre - because lots of people will bring horses and pets with them.

Yeah, another picture I thought of using--from evacuations from flooding out amaebi's way--included a woman with her dog and bird. (Horses would indeed require something like a sports ground, though.)

When our town was without power for a week, the high school offered shelter and showers, and although we stayed in our house, Wakanomori did take them up on their offer of showers.

Churches like the people who make them are full of contradictions. In London for many years St Martin's in the Fields crypt turned into a homeless shelter in the centre of London. They also have free lunch time concerts classical mainly but also flamenco tribal all sorts. And day time it's a cheap for london cafeteria. And then from some years back Churches realized they only use the buildings in the day time often mainly Sundays they used to get locked up after any service in case people stole things or set in wait to mug old ladies. But yeah some years back Churches Together I think it was called started offering shelters for the homeless during the winter months (Xmas and following) So you'd have up to seven churches per area which offered their church as a shelter one day a week for the period. They'd have volunteers trained up to welcome them offer a soup breakfast. They tried to liaise with drug alcohol and long term housing agencies but people would promise too much or expect too much. It's sticky plasters for a gaping wound. Then you'd get other churches who would go along with having the outsides hosed down with freezing water (sometimes also mild detergents without warning in the early hours of the morning to discourage rough sleepers from sleeping by the church. it's mainly hotels and business and after 9-11 special police were formed to stop anyone sleeping by government buildings. The churchmen would justify it to protect old ladies from getting mugged. And yes the same churchmen could have Xmas collections for brown babies in africa or whatever the term is. I'm not saying that's wrong. The problem with letting the poor into your house is that they dirty your carpets. Brecht put it on Caucasian Chalk Circle, of course I love the poor and admire their simple honest ways, it's their smell I can't stand. Not judging just saying the bipeds with the opposable thumbs who think they are god's gift to the universe well maybe still a work in progress.
