I have all kinds of things I want to post about, but it all takes time, so I offer these as placeholders in the meantime. Which mood of carousel horse are you these days? And what, besides (apparently!) Ceresota Flour, is always desirable?

That's a wonderful ghost sign.

Where did the carousel horses come from?

They come from the Holyoke Merry-Go-Round, which is open on weekends and for parties (Ellen Kushner and Delia Sherman had a celebration-of-marriage party there some years back, and I went as sartorias's plus-one, which is how I discovered it. This weekend I took my tutee to it ^_^)

Somewhere I have some photos of various ghost signs in Bisbee; one of my favorites was a century-old billboard, painted on a concrete retaining wall, advertising a local bread company's products as both "Delicious" and "Sanitary". Kind of funny how advertising terms trend just like everything else—these days it seems like everything from bread to skin cream is "nourishing".

Given that I've been symptom-free for several days but am still stuck in quarantine until I test negative, I'm definitely feeling that second carousel horse today.

Maybe my current carousel mood isn't a horse at all. Maybe it's an oarfish. And, yes, I am referring to the Greenway Carousel.

I am fascinated by ghost signs. There are many in Winnipeg, Manitoba - where my parents live. If I get downtown when I'm there in mid-June I'll take some more pictures of them. I feel more like the second carousel horse - the silvery one with a dark snout.

The second horse seems to me to have a pensive, even shy, quality to him--not to say that you do, necessarily! But I see that in the way he looks up at us, but with his head tipping downward.

I found two pictures I took in Winnipeg in 2011. I am sure I took many more pictures over the years, but I don't have them organized in a way that makes them easy to find. One of these is of some Winnipeg ghost signs, and the other is of a sign with a *ghost*! If you click on each of the pictures you can see them more clearly as much larger images.

Oooh, I really love the mural underneath the ghost sign for Hotel McLaren (which I love advertises itself as "a friendly place") And the ghost in the second is accompanied by sea birds! I feel like if I got out my bird ID book, we could figure out what ones they are.
