It's snowing at a rate of about three inches an hour--a ruler we have on our porch just topped 14 inches.

Our road isn't plowed yet:

Can you make out the mail truck?

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep

In the time I've taken writing this, it's now at 15 inches.

ETA: 16 inches and still falling:

Wow! Those photos are both beautiful and ominous. I especially like the one with the little creek. We keep getting missed -- the forecast will say "5 to 8 inches" and then the next time I look it's *3 to 5" and then it's "<1 inch" and then it's "overcast." I don't really want to shovel a lot of snow, but am starting to worry about whether we are even getting enough moisture this winter and whether plants have enough cover from frost heaves.

But there is nothing like the light and the glint of fast-falling snow, and it's already February.

Don't you guys do yourselves a mischief moving all that stuff.

P.

Now it's at 16 inches--I just added a picture.

Yeah, we're going to be very careful. My back and arms ain't what they used to be.

And I hear you on the worry about moisture! We've been in extreme drought here. This will help a bit.

That's the view if you go to our driveway and face left, and also walk a little ways, (i.e., past our next-door neighbor)

We walked that way once. It curves uphill, right?

I would never know--I don't recognize a thing. That is so odd!

Yes, that's right. It curves up, and there's a point with some woods to the left--that's the view. But I'm not surprised it looks unfamiliar!

Oooooooh, yes!

When I move back to France, come winter, I will have a snow icon! :D

Thank you for these photos!

I wanted to say too how much I liked the phrase: lovely, dark and deep. And silent. Beautiful. A good excuse to hibernate if you can.

I have to quickly confess that the line comes from Robert Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems-and-poets/poems/detail/42891) (and then apologize if you already knew that--I just don't want you to think I'm that poetic all on my own ;-)

And yes, absolutely, re: hibernation!

Oh, lovely and cold and amazing! Yes, I could make out the mail-truck. :) Can you just stay at home today? For several days? I guess that all won't clear in a hurry.

I did stay home--everything was closed (including several roads). Fortunately, I work from home! Thursdays I've been volunteering with some high school kids, but the school was closed, so I didn't have to go out at all--and I didn't, except for the walk and to shovel out the driveway.

Your creek is really something! And the snow is so lovely, deep and thick and pillowy. It snowed for days here too, when im told it's hardly snowed in a decade, but we got maybe eight inches at this elevation. And then it warmed up and rained really hard for a couple days, so that was the end of that. Not too much shovelling for us thankfully.

A few years ago we had massive snows, but last year we got almost nothing at all, and the rest of the year was equally dry, putting us in severe drought. This one snowfall won't change that, but it sure was reassuring to see. ... I wouldn't want another one of equal size to come anytime soon, though--that's when the shoveling gets difficult--the piles of snow are too high to shovel new snow onto.

Does the lack of snow for almost a decade mean that you've been in drought too? Glad you got a good snowfall (and that you didn't have too much to shovel).
