I was a vagrant yesterday, and in my wanderings, I came to the media lab where Little Springtime works, and where the hedgehog from last entry was printed. Verily I say unto you, we live in the future.

Here is a ukelele, made with a 3D printer

Here are the banks of printers. Their brand is "makerbot replicator." Alas, if I say "Earl Grey, hot!" they are not yet able to produce an aromatic drink.

Very futuristic, right? The scene reminds me of a big airport, like Dallas Fort Worth, or Sydney.

Makerbot recplicator? It's like they've named these things in the specific hope that the machines will run mad and try to churn out a dystopian future.

It's kind of a cute name, though? I get the feeling that if they run mad, it'll be in a sorcerer's apprentice style rather than in a HAL 9000 style.

They would probably manufacture adorable little plastic minions a la Despicable Me, it's true.

The Fledgling is about a girl who learns to fly from a Canada goose. It occurs to me that an adult reading it for the first time might find the villains rather cartoonish, but the learning-to-fly bits are marvelous, and I adore the heroine, Georgie.

It was actually two ducks (or, since they're more numerous in this photo, two Canada geese) chasing each other through the replicator. Two became four became sixteen.... it's a good thing they got tired when they did.

... If I learn to play a stringed instrument, the first one on my list is banjo. I like *listening* to ukelele though.

Living in the Future

Truly - we are. I recall my mother describing milk deliveries to her house via horse-drawn carriage (and being told to leave the Horse Poop Alone!).
3D printers. Will we soon see catalogs offering instructions for 3D printouts of "Things" rather than having a truck deliver it to the house?
I see ice in the waterway. We still have 18" in the fields.

Wow, milk deliveries in a horse and buggy, and just a generation back. That's wonderful.

I cropped the geese photo, otherwise you would have seen the sign that said "thin ice" at the front. Yes, very thin indeed!

And I wonder what this season is going to be like for maple tapping. Very abbreviated, I'm guessing.

There is so much wonder in a vision of the future that includes replicators, but the wish for the organic and living is strong. I appreciate the utilitarian nature of the workplace, but feel that it's important for the utilitarian to also be beautiful. So, thank you for the ducks, after all those straight lines. And thank you for ukeleles.
