planting an egg

It's been a while, but I finished the next illustration for my Semillas y Huevos picture book, where the kids plant an egg and put an avocado seed under a chicken to hatch.

It took extra long because I finished one drawing but was dissatisfied with it, so had to start over. (I like this one better)

Here the kids are, planting the egg.

This is reminding me of a story from Bruce Coville's Book of Nightmares II.

Hahaha! What terrible thing happens when they plant something they shouldn't?

The character plants a pumpkin seed over his dog's grave hoping for the dog to be reborn in it but the roots reach a bunch of other dead animals in the soil.

This is lovely! I like the suggestion of different colored flowers/plants in the background. You have captured the intensity of children's experimentation. They can be so focused (in short bursts).

I remember in a film on "creation care," (film's self-description), they talked about the concept of "beholding" instead of just seeing. I may have talked about this to you before--it's one of those concepts that made a big impression on me, so I talk about it a lot and never remember where and to whom I've said what. But in explaining beholding, they said it's like what children do, when they're really, really looking at some tiny thing: an ant walking along, or the serrated edges of a leaf, etc. They were saying we needed, as adults, to look at things this way: with all our heart and mind. (I think poets do this.) ... Anyway, yes!! Children and their intense focus.

NOTHING beats oil pastels for color and vibrancy. They are messy and imprecise, but oh BOY the colors. So they are perfect for a story set in the Amazon.

You didn't at all! Or rather, I am a very simple plant that drinks up all praise very happily. MMmmmmmmmmm my leaves are big and green now.
