I so know what you mean about feeling like things in the story serve the author's agenda rather than happening naturally and gracefully or even painfully. I know you know what I am talking about in its most recent incarnation since you liked the review in which I commented on something of the like.
I keep reminding myself that when, on that future day, I take up my fiction again, I have to be verrrrry careful of not falling on the side of manipulating events, as it were, simply for shock value, etc.
