Yes, it seems as if it should at least be *possible*, doesn't it? Some plastic degrades rather quickly in sun, although I'm not sure how quickly in shade. And the little bits should be susceptible to microbes if they're made right. I think that there could still be trouble even then, as birds and turtles eat the plastic that hasn't degraded yet, and it fills their stomachs. I don't think we can solve that problem at the chemical level. (There might be some fast selection going on, though...)
