I've known certain types of work-a-day people for whom "work harder" was a personal mantra. It's a way to channel your desires into pratical ways to get what you want. I've never heard it used to disparage the poor, but then, I don't associate with those who would do that. A quick image search on the phrase was interesting. There were three main contexts: "Nobody cares, work harder" - externally focused, antagonistic, could be anti-poor "Don't complain, just work harder" - could be internal or external. I prefer if it were internal as motivator "You're better than this, work harder" - again, I prefer this internal rather than external because it kinda works as a motivator -Jacob
