Rhapsody to humid heat

Waking up this morning was like waking up in the Amazon, and I AM HERE FOR THIS. Out my back window, a northeastern jungle, so many shades of green, dappled sun, morning mist. An aural bouquet of birdsong and small critter sounds. Right now there's a scent of wood smoke.

I love the way the medium of humid air makes you intimate with every other thing. The way everything is right on your skin and in your lungs. The glass of water sweats, you sweat. Time dissolves, sound travels nonlinearly, odors are more vivid. I love the lassitude, the exhaustion.

It isn't trolling if you are celebrating something you genuinely like. If you were showing up on people's comments to chide them for their reports of heatstroke, then you would be a troll, but I can picture that even less than the current temperatures in Boston.

I'm grateful for your understanding, and indeed, I really would *never* do anything like that. I was going to offer a whole long disclaimer at the end of my entry, about how I know I'm speaking from a position of privilege (I'm not out working on a highway or in a sweatshop in weather like this, and I don't have health situations that make it dangerous), but I decided to let it pass. But yeah: I know it's no joke for a LOT of people.

And I do, genuinely, love it. I am totally blissed out right now.

Well there's the mighty Connecticut--but that's a drive. There are small creeks and basins, though, which I check on daily.

That is probably my least favourite weather, and I love how right and pleasant you make it sound. I shall try to remember to appreciate it more!

I certainly don't want you to feel any obligation to like weather you dislike! But I know for me, it's always eye opening to learn that things I really don't like are other people's faves. So if a muggy day comes your way and you're thinking UGGHHH, and then you stop and think, but wow, Asakiyume *love* this--that'll be a win.

It's not quite that hot where I am! So there's that. I know it's not great for whole swaths of the population, and I hope they, and you, find ways to be cooler.

Thanks for sharing your perspective about humidity—I'm someone who generally prefers being too hot over being too cold, but I don't currently have strong feelings about really humid heat, perhaps because I haven't experienced too much of it?

So, it's interesting to me that you have such fondly positive associations with it. I don't think I've ever seen anyone describe humidity as a medium for intimacy, before, although I think I do recall having some very sweaty sex, one summer when I lived in California's Cental Valley! 😅 (I'm not sure if it was all that humid, actually, but it was definitely hot enough for full-body slippery-ness.)

The colors sound so lovely. It was lushly green when I was recently traveling back east. When I strolled along the Hudson in Albany, the way the light filtered through the trees was so lovelY!

I'm laughing with appreciation for your wording! I wish there was a way to share the joy that could actually transmute in others into less suffering! (Not in an "ought" way, but in a magical way--like, the discomfort and danger would actually, truly be physically lessened.)

This post stuck with me through my morning bike commute; I hadn't thought to think about this weather in those terms. As others have noted, it's not so comfortable for me, but I appreciate your point about the humidity drawing attention to relationships and connectedness.
