I saw the comet! Thanks to mallorys_camera I knew where to look, and I went out with binoculars, and so I could see the long spray of glittering ice--how powerful is the sun to blow on the comet and make that tail appear!

It's so beautiful.

And it's doing its comet thing: appearing in a year of cataclysm, just the way a comet should.


(confirmation bias or what! Lots of very agreeable comets show up when there are no cataclysms whatsoever ... Or do they? I suppose there's always a cataclysm happening somewhere...)

We went back out just now and couldn't locate it--I think some haze had come in. But when I first saw it, wow.

And I do like the name: Neowise. If I were a comet, I'd want a name like that.

I was so happy! Comets are such wonderful border-things, most spectacular as they disintegrate, attached to our solar system, but only just.

How fabulous! Alas, it is the rainy season here, so night skies are mostly cloudy. I agree, the name is lovely too.

Dang, that's a shame! It's the same where two of my daughters are... well, maybe the next comet will be good enough to come in the dry season (and also not to accompany disaster).

I know! On the other hand, I once saw the conjunction of Jupiter and Venus so clearly that it was reflected in a river. And I have seen a total solar eclipse twice and several lunar eclipses, and even a meteor (on a clear evening in New York City in September 2001, when the skies were clear because all flights had been shut down...). And even the Milky Way, which is a rare thing for a city-dweller. So I have had my fair share of interesting celestial phenomena. Some day when travel is allowed again I will go and look for the aurora, either north or south, whichever lets me across the border.
