Sea Hummingbirds (and Bee Sharks)

On September 9, Em imagines sea hummingbirds for her sister Tammy:

Maybe you can start a whole new genealogy. The sea hummingbirds, who have scales instead of feathers, and both lungs and gills

Here is a sea hummingbird:

And--unrelated to this day in Pen Pal-- some time ago I also promised a picture of a bee shark for Benjanun Sriduangkaew, @bees_ja on Twitter:

"All nautical pride we laid aside
and we ran the vessel ashore
on the Gulliby Isles where the Poo-poo smiles
and the rubbily Ub-dugs roar.
And we sat on the edge of a sandy ledge
and we shot at the whistling bee-ee-ee
and the cinnamon bats wore waterproof hats
as they dipped in the shiny sea."

NOW I MUST DRAW A CINNAMON BAT.

I will need to rub the paper with cinnamon.

Please let us see the cinnamon bat when it's finished.

Surrounded by creative folks!

[identity profile] yamamanama.livejournal.com 2014-09-09 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That is beautiful.
Hummingbirds already look like they have scales.

I want to paint a macaw for Emma to finish.

[identity profile] asakiyume.livejournal.com 2014-09-09 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they do already look like they have scales. They're maybe more dinosaur-like, or at last, lizard-like, than many birds.

If you do do that collaboration, take photos!

[identity profile] yamamanama.livejournal.com 2014-09-09 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
We will, I'm sure.

Here is a sea hummingbird

YAY.

a bee shark

YAY.

[identity profile] asakiyume.livejournal.com 2014-09-09 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The yays have it!

Also you should maybe check out this Betty the Shark EP (http://bettytheshark.bandcamp.com/album/sad-bad-and-glad-ep), which I found searching on shark-and-bee music. So far I like all the songs (I've listened to three).

I'm glad you like them!

[identity profile] dark-phoenix54.livejournal.com 2014-09-09 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
BEE SHARK!!! Oh no! It bites AND stings! (does it pollinate sea cucumbers?)

[identity profile] asakiyume.livejournal.com 2014-09-10 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
It pollinates ALL the sea plants!

[identity profile] scallywag195.livejournal.com 2014-09-09 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the bee shark best. It is really cute.

One time for a crazy orienteering meet I dressed up as a bee. I rented a bee costume and put yellow and black stripes on my face and neck. (A tour bus filled with tourists saw me at a stop light while I was driving to the meet. They all pointed at me from their windows)

I was a roving control which meant I got to buzz all over the place in section of forest about 30' x 30' and people running the race had to tag me to get their control card punched. I think I got more running done at that meet than any of the others where I had been a participant.

[identity profile] asakiyume.livejournal.com 2014-09-10 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
You were like the golden snitch! You were like a human ball! I can just *bet* you got more running done!

[identity profile] mnfaure.livejournal.com 2014-09-09 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
A bee-shark! What a terrfic, wacky combination.

I love how graceful the sea-hummingbird looks.

[identity profile] asakiyume.livejournal.com 2014-09-10 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I could find a way to combine shark and bee that wasn't just adding bee colors to a shark....

[identity profile] heliopausa.livejournal.com 2014-09-10 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, lovely -- the hummingbird especially! :)
(and have you seen this? http://www.inewidea.com/2014/09/09/65752.html)

[identity profile] asakiyume.livejournal.com 2014-09-10 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
That light-spitting fish is astonishing. There are so many marvels in this world! Thank you so much for that (I love his bewildered looking face--I realize he always looks that way, even when he hasn't just swallowed a bioluminescent crustacean, but still!

[identity profile] khiemtran.livejournal.com 2014-09-10 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
I was about to say that your sea hummingbird reminds me of a weedy sea dragon, but then I noticed you had one in your icon already...

[identity profile] asakiyume.livejournal.com 2014-09-10 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Weedy sea dragons are so fabulous-seeming--in the sense of, they look like a mythical beast.

[identity profile] deponti.livejournal.com 2014-09-10 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Such delightful creatures!

Having difficulties even accessing my own LJ nowadays...but today there was a break in the clouds!

[identity profile] asakiyume.livejournal.com 2014-09-11 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad you were able to break through and take a look :-)
