in the yard of a house on the highway

I always enjoy going by this house; the people living in it seem, by their accoutrements, to be exuberant. They had a Puerto Rican flag flying for a while, and now they have an American one. They are creating a flower garden in the front yard, with all kinds of little statues and mini pathways. They have a New York Yankees sign--which, in Massachusetts, is a sure sign of bravado (or trolling, or both). Beside the house, where there's space for parking cars, they have a basketball hoop and a barbecue grill.

Today they also have this:

What else can you do?

(Off-Topic: Having a Boston anything in New Haven is pretty much the same).

Not much else, at this remove. Huge demonstrations are a good idea, though, and petitions, and they seem maybe to be working.

...it's all too late, though. It's another time when I wish we could switch timelines....

Use a gun, go to jail... what ever happened to that? Oh, it's been changed: Wear a hoodie, go to the cemetery.

Yeah -_-

I am still so angry about that.

It's horrific.

How long ago was the Puerto Rican flag? I wonder if it had anything to do with the band pep squad that jeered the Puerto Rican basketball player?

Iowa City is having a satellite Million Hoodie March soon.

The Puerto Rican flag was quite some time ago--maybe a couple of years ago? I suspect the family themselves have ties to Puerto Rico. For a while they had both flags, and now just the American one.

That's good about the march.

Me too.

"Exuberant" might be a good word for these people. They have a lot to express in their lives and want to show it to the world. My guess is that they could be interesting people to get to know.

They might also come from a culture in which it is normal to express one's preferences and hobbies publicly. In New England with its history of Puritanism and its WASPy set of values (no everyone of course), these people probably stand out more than they would elsewhere.

I think yes, on all counts! I intend to say hi, if the dad is ever outside when I go by.

Oh, I love that they did that for him. My whole family is livid over it. It's disgusting and horrific that something like that is going on in this country, in this time.

Ditto and ditto. I bet there are lots of people who felt heartened, seeing this tribute.
