Yeah. Something I think of that's related, but not exactly the same, is the dialectic with what things are considered prestige items. Once you're able to produce eggshell-thin porcelain, and everyone wants that, you get the uplifting of the deliberately heavy, asymmetrical, unique tea bowl as the height of prestige.
What you're saying about synthetic fabrics being cheaper and longer lasting makes me also think about the use of plastic generally. I've remarked to friends and family about what I call the Universal Warm-Weather Chair, which I see outdoors all over the world, both in places I've traveled to myself, but also whenever you get footage from some warm climate place. You can buy that here for like $5.00 a chair. At that price, it's not surprising that you find it everywhere.
