They do make money: you pay for the right to enter, and then you pay for the fruit you pick. So theoretically, they're getting the fruit picked without having to pay laborers to do it. However, the laborers are better pickers--so that's where the orchard's expense comes in.

I think it's also good for community relations and building public awareness of the orchard.
