Sports Donut

Today there was a long delay between the time the healing angel was supposed to get out of his job at Dunkin Donuts and the time he actually did. He felt bad about this (I was his ride home, so I'd been waiting), so he brought me a donut:



Whereupon the following dialogue ensued. See if you can find the error.

Me: Is it for ... football?

Him: No, it's for, I think, Ortiz? He's a Red Sox player? Maybe their ... pitcher? That's his number.

Me: So . . . did he do something?

Him: I think maybe he's retiring?

Me (eating donut): Oh. Well, he's delicious. How did you find all this out, about Ortiz and all?

Him: Well, the donut is labeled "Ortiz" in the racks, and I think I heard somebody else talking to a customer about it.

The error
Daniel David Ortiz is a hitter, not a pitcher. In researching this post, I also discovered that he made an ad with Dunkin Donuts, and the ad won them an award. ... Hurray?

Every time I'm driving somewhere with my wife and daughter and I see a donut shop, I yell, "Donuts!" I sometimes even stop and buy some. :-)

Indeed! I envy you the donut -- I'm a Red Sox fan in exile, and I got to see him when he came through Seattle about a month ago. But we have no Dunkin Donuts here, so I'm missing out on that part of it.

My impression is that baseball players are the least buff of the popular-sports athletes--maybe because they like donuts with icing!

I love that conversation. And both of you are way ahead of me in knowing even as much as you did, or as the healing angel overheard, about Mr. Ortiz or any other sports figure.

I wonder how it feels to have a doughnut named after you.

We have a David Ortiz home run ball from when he was a nobody playing in the Minnesota Twins system. He was at New Britain Stadium, and we had season tickets, and the kids would run outside the park to collect balls hit over the fence. Ortiz (Papi is his nickname) signed it for us.

And once upon a time I worked at a Dunkin Donuts overnight. It was before it was bought out and nationalized, and each location still employed bakers to make the donuts. Since the midnight-6 shift was sort of quiet, I took care of the counter and did bakery tasks like donut-filling and powdering. In fact, when I interviewed for my first job at the college, the smarty-pants team member with the last question thought she was going to catch me off-guard by asking, "How do they get the filling in Twinkies?" And I said, "They inject it, if it's anything at all like doughnuts." I had her then--she started laughing out of surprise that I knew. And I told her the whole story of the hoppers of jelly and bavarian creme, and how they had big pointed tubes, and you held a doughnut in each hand and punched them onto the tubes, and actuated a lever with the backs of your hands to fill the doughnuts. You knew by the heft how much to do. And if you turn a Twinkie over and look at the bottom, you see the injection holes.

I don't think Dunkin Donuts do them that way anymore. Most DDs are satellites, and the doughnuts are made elsewhere. We used to have real eggs on location, too. I had to crack them to make the breakfast sandwiches.

Wow, that's amazing--all of it: the signed ball, but also working at DD back when! And that you could answer her question about the Twinkies!

The healing angel tells me they do still have jelly and cream injectors at his DD.

Having a donut named after you seems like it would be a wonderful monument--one you know will make people happy.
