I believe it does need another apple tree, but there are so many apple trees around that that's not a problem.

I can't recall what kind of apple I planted the seed from! Maybe a Northern Spy, as I love those sorts of apples, and those trees produce fruit only every other year, a pattern this one seems to be following.
